Putting my own online dating reputation at risk for the better good of online daters everywhere, in particular our own users. My previous post was based on improving the way men message women. This time I tested out 11 different types of profile pictures to understand which profile pictures are the most successful for men to use on their online dating profiles. I based the success of each type of profile picture by how many responses each one received when I would message women.

The styles are listed from most to least successful. For example, smiling in a basic setting received the most responses while taking a selfie proved to be the worst option.

Research conducted by eHarmony, which looked at over 12, online dating profiles, found funny is one of the most alluring words a man can use in his profile, as reported by women. You don’t have to be a famous comedian to put a little humor into your profile.

Ready to Try Online Dating? First, write your profile. As an experienced online dater, I know it works. I also know that an appealing profile is critical. So how do you make yourself appealing? Do not use a favorite old photo and a bio from a previous online attempt; that’s not smart online dating. The Photo Professional photographs aren’t necessary, but posting a cellphone photo taken at arm’s length isn’t cool, and using an old photo never makes for a pleasant surprise when you meet a date.

Have a friend take photos, and don’t wear sunglasses or a hat, or stand in shadows. Headshots work, but a potential date also wants to see the rest of you. Your picture is the first item on your menu.
